I recently enjoyed watching a master decorator at work. In less than two hours, David Cox, of D Cox Decorating, had installed a stunning feature wall in the home of Sabina Staedler, who is the Australian Distributor of Swedish-made Majvillan wallpaper – a range I am beyond crushing over for it’s stunning designs and its eco-friendly credentials. I mean, check out their website… seriously gorg.

David’s been in the biz for a long time… and if there is something he doesn’t know about wallpaper then it’s not worth knowing.

So here’s a quick ‘fast five’ with David:

  1. What are the qualities to look for in selecting wall paper?

Firstly, I would look for a paper that is not too thin as it can show every lump and bump in the wall. Good quality washable papers are better for any high traffic areas as it’s possible to remove dirty marks. If you have high ceilings or in stairwells I would choose a non-woven paper as they are less likely to stretch and cause problems with the pattern match. They are also the easiest to hang.

  1. What do you need to do to remove wallpaper when you are ready for a change?

Most of the modern papers are what is called ‘easy strip’, where the face of the paper pulls off easily leaving the backing paper attached to the wall. Give this a couple of good soaks with water and leave for a few minutes and it will come off easily. If you are going to hang new wallpaper, all you have to do is let it dry then sand it smooth, the old adhesive will assist in the hanging of the new paper. If you are planning to paint the wall, then all the old paste must be removed. Normally, a bit of a sponge with a floor squeegee mop will remove what is required. You can also use a product like Zinsser DIF which has enzymes that break down the old paste.

  1. How long will wallpaper last?

Wallpaper can last for many years in low traffic areas but like paint it’s prone to bleaching if exposed to sunlight.

  1. Can wallpaper be used in the bathroom?

For bathrooms, just make sure that the wallpaper is either the washable type (like a non-woven) or a vinyl.

  1. What is one last top tip?

It’s always best to discuss with your wallpaper installer the current paint or coating that is currently on the wall. If it’s bare plaster it will need to be sealed before hanging paper. Another thing to remember is that Dulux wash and wear 101 will need a primer over it as it can repel the adhesive.
